The Metrex Paris Meeting 12-16 May 2009

A new dimension to planning: sustainable development and metropolitan regions

A conference bringing together 40 European metropolitan regions organised by METREX, the IAU île-de-France, the Île-de-France region and the OECD.

Sustainable development is now central to European metropolitan regions’ strategic planning, which requires us to take a fresh look at the concept of planning.

How can planning help combat global warming and reduce the consumption of space, energy and resources?
What role can planning play in these troubled and uncertain times?
How can we ensure that planning strategy is implemented? How can we improve monitoring and evaluation systems in order to react faster in a situation that requires joined-up governance?

At a time when Paris Île-de-France Region is reviewing its long-term masterplan which impacts on many sectoral and territorial policies, Île-de-France’s aims to take up the challenge of sustainable development to become one of the world’s leading “Eco-Regions”.

On May 15th, 2009, in association with the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), the Île-de-France Region, the IAU île-de-France and METREX are opening this international conference to a wide audience.
